Twenty San Diego County elementary schools were among 231 statewide named California Distinguished Schools for the 1988-89 school year, state schools Supt. Bill Honig announced Friday.

The awards are given in alternate years to elementary and secondary schools whose principals apply for the recognition based on rank or improvement in standardized reading and math scores at the school. Attendance improvement and the length of the school day are also factors given weight.

The San Diego County schools are:

Bonsall School; Central School in Coronado; Pacific View School in Encinitas; Julian School; Monterey Heights School in Lemon Grove; Pacifica and South Oceanside schools in Oceanside; Burbank, Fremont, Juarez and Spreckels elementaries in San Diego; Cajon Park, Carlton Hills and Chet F. Harritt schools in Santee, and Central, Imperial Beach, Nestor, Nicoloff, Sunnyslope and West View schools in South Bay.
