A 15-member team from Marshall High School in the Los Feliz area won the California State Mock Trial Competition, sponsored by the Constitutional Rights Foundation of Los Angeles, which concluded Friday.
Marshall played the defense in a mock trial involving drug charges and defeated a team from Berkeley High School in Alameda County, said David Tokofsky, one of two Marshall teachers who coached the team. Marshall was declared the winner by a panel that included Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Judith Chirlin and Vance Raye, a legal adviser to Gov. George Deukmejian.
“I feel wonderful. I was pretty confident we were going to win,” said Ana Liza Fulay, 17, who played a defense attorney. “I think I got all the experience I need to study law.”
Fulay and teammates Carlo Brooks, Arisa Mattson and Lola Moon Glaudini also won individual awards.
Marshall has won the city championship the last two years and came in second in the state competition last year. Tokofsky said the team will go to the national finals May 11-14 in Louisville, Ky., if it can raise the money for the trip.
