A look ahead to 1992: Magic Johnson and Larry Bird, after leading the Lakers and the Celtics to the NBA finals in June of 1992, retire simultaneously from “professional” basketball and lead the U.S. Olympic men’s basketball team a gold medal at Barcelona, defeating the Soviet Union in the championship game.
From an NCAA Final Four confrontation in 1979 to numerous NBA encounters to eventual teammates. Talk about icing on the cake.
