College Roundup : Long Beach Rips UC Irvine in Baseball

Cal State Long Beach scored seven runs in the fifth inning to break a 3-3 tie and went on to defeat UC Irvine, 16-5, in a Big West Conference baseball game Friday at Blair Field in Long Beach.
Deryk Hudson had a two-run double in the fifth and also a solo home run in the eighth for Long Beach (33-8, 5-2). Hudson, who leads Long Beach with six home runs, played at Fullerton College last season.
Andy Croghan, a freshman from Servite High School, went the distance to improve to 6-0 for Long Beach. Irvine scored three unearned runs in the first inning off Croghan. Al Rodriguez had three hits for Irvine (14-22-1, 1-6). Jeff Haak took the loss for Irvine.
In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. baseball:
Cal Poly Pomona 5, Chapman 2--Wayne Koklys pitched a six-hitter for visiting Cal Poly Pomona (16-21, 10-6) at Hart Park in Orange. Chris Cutliff hit his fourth home run of the season in the fifth for Chapman (16-21, 8-11). Jeff Petredes (2-3) took the loss for Chapman. Miccal Jackson had two hits, including a solo home run and three RBIs for Chapman.
In Big West Conference women’s tennis:
UC Irivne 6, Fresno State 3--UC Irvine (11-13) won five of six singles matches to clinch the match in Fresno. Kathy Rose won 6-2, 6-0; Stacey Kadigan won 2-6, 7-6, 6-0; Biljana Korac won, 6-3, 6-1; Karin Bering won, 7-5, 6-1; and Melissa Vaccaro won, 6-1, 6-2, for Irvine.
