Truck Traffic on Streets in Laguna Beach
Imagine being stopped in Laguna Beach at the bottom of 3rd Street waiting for a large truck to clear the crest of the hill ahead. The truck is slowly approaching the top when suddenly it starts rolling backward toward you--its engine having stalled and its brakes having failed.
This happened last week to a lady in a Volkswagen bug, but luckily there was no traffic, and she was able to respond skillfully in a panic situation. The truck rolled past the stop sign at great speed, but fortunately no one was hurt.
With the housing development at the Top of the World neighborhood, there have been at least two other instances of large trucks going out of control and across the lanes of traffic.
The city of Laguna Beach should take notice of these warnings of unsafe practices by the large trucks and provide preventive measures before a tragedy occurs. The schoolchildren at Laguna Beach High School and Thurston Middle School, as well as all of us who travel these roads daily, are in great danger if the city continues to allow unsafe trucks to operate up and down the steep grades of our city’s streets.
