A hang glider pilot from Julian died Saturday afternoon when his craft crashed in the McCain Valley in East County.
The victim was identified as Robert Compton, 35.
San Diego County Sheriff’s Deputy Ron Hubbard of the helicopter unit said the fatality occurred about 2 p.m. at the 3,500-foot level, about 3 miles southeast of Monolith Rock, just north of Interstate 8.
Hubbard said Compton’s companion attempted to administer first aid but to no avail. Hubbard said the helicopter unit was called in to remove the body because of the rugged terrain.
