NATION : You Love New York? Then Pay Up

ALBANY, N.Y. — The cost of loving is going up.
New York, after years of allowing manufacturers free use of the “I Love New York” logo, will start charging royalties this year.
People who print the logo on sweat shirts, key chains, pens or other consumer goods will be forced to give New York state 6% to 10% of the money they make, Stephen Morello, a state deputy commissioner for economic development, said today.
The state has spent more than $100 million advertising itself to tourists since launching the “I Love New York” advertising campaign in 1977, he said.
