“Batman: The Art of the Dark Knight,” an exhibit of more than 50 pieces of original comic book, strip and poster art celebrating the character’s 50th birthday, will open at the Cartoon Art Museum in San Francisco May 25. Created by Bob Kane for DC comics in 1939, Batman represented a departure from the traditional costumed comic book hero: He possessed no superpowers and his battle against crime was not a crusade for truth and justice, but an extended campaign of revenge for the murder of his parents. The exhibit, which runs through Aug. 19, also will include displays of Batman toys, comic books and other memorabilia.
