Sen. Dennis DeConcini’s longtime campaign treasurer has admitted taking about $500,000 from reelection bank accounts, the senator’s spokesman said. U.S. Atty. Stephen M. McNamee wouldn’t say whether charges would be filed against accountant Thomas Karlsen of Mesa, who joined the Arizona Democrat’s campaign staff in 1974. McNamee took depositions from other workers in the Arizona Democrat’s office. In a telephone interview, Bob Maynes, DeConcini’s press secretary, said Karlsen promised to pay back the money which he admitted to taking.
