BEIJING — A violent hailstorm raging across a large area of southwest China killed at least 87 people, injured 4,200 others and destroyed thousands of houses, the New China News Agency reported today.
The storm struck more than 10 cities and districts before dawn Thursday, leaving a trail of destruction as it swept for five hours through densely populated Sichuan province at a speed of about 28 yards per second. The agency said hailstones measured nearly an inch in diameter and weighed up to eight ounces.
