Iraq said it is building a sophisticated, Soviet-designed battle tank and is developing a new, long-range missile as part of a major program to beef up its weapons industry. Maj. Gen. Amer Saadi, chief of Iraq’s military industries, also said that Baghdad is negotiating with France to build Mirage 2000 fighters and with four other aircraft companies to build their warplanes. Saadi said the Soviet-designed T-72 battle tank Iraq is building is equipped with sophisticated combat systems and will be the centerpiece of a five-day Iraqi arms exhibition beginning Friday.
