Record cold air chilled the Northeast and Great Lakes, with the mercury plunging below freezing, but temperatures soared into the 90s as a stretch of summer weather lingered over the plains. Unseasonably cold temperatures stretched from New Jersey to Michigan, the National Weather Service said. Cities setting or tying record daily lows included Alpena, Mich., (18); Atlantic City, N.J., (24); Erie, Pa., (27); Hartford, Conn., (26), and Rochester, N.Y., (24). Meanwhile, among the record highs set or tied: Amarillo, Tex., (93); Denver (82) and Midland, Tex., (96).
