WASHINGTON — Turner Broadcasting System Inc. said today that it is planning to launch a daily commercial-free news program for schools in August, challenging one containing advertising that was recently tested by Whittle Communications LP.
Turner Chairman Ted Turner told a news conference that his Cable News Network will begin offering the daily 15-minute program for schools, CNN Newsroom, starting Aug. 14.
Whittle is evaluating the results of the test of its commercial news service, Channel One, in the hope of expanding it nationally in the fall of 1990.
Turner said he decided at the last minute against including any advertising because of some educators’ objections.
