GTE Cable Network Approved: GTE Telephone Operations-California, a subsidiary of GTE Corp., won approval from the Federal Communications Commission to build a telephone and cable TV network in Cerritos to test a broad spectrum of voice, video and data services. Initially, the company will provide fiber optic lines to 700 residences. The Thousand Oaks-based company will supply about 100 of those homes with telephone and television service later this year. The FCC had approved a GTE plan to build a 170-mile coaxial system in April, 1988. The commission upheld that decision, denying challenges by some cable TV associations.
