WASHINGTON — The Navy today pushed back the next test date for a submarine-launched Trident 2 missile from April to July to make necessary design changes in the wake of last month’s spectacular crash.
In the first sea test of the $26.5-million missile March 21, the Navy’s deadliest weapon broke through the surface of the water off the coast of Florida, cartwheeled off course and exploded in a burst of fiery debris. Much to the Navy’s chagrin, the scene was captured on videotape and shown on television around the world the same day.
