The Western Intercollegiate Volleyball Assn. regional selection tournament will be played today and Saturday at Loyola Marymount. The single-elimination tourney will determine an at-large entry to the men’s NCAA championships.
Tonight’s match-ups pit Stanford against USC at 6 and Hawaii vs. UC Santa Barbara at 8. The championship will be decided at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The winner will join the regular-season conference champion, UCLA, in the NCAA final four, along with two teams from Eastern and Midwest regions. Stanford, which tied UCLA in the conference standings but lost a coin flip for the title, is the tourney’s top seed.
The WIVA is the nation’s dominant volleyball conference, having produced every NCAA champion since a final four was started 19 years ago. The WIVA produced 27 of the 30 members of the 1984 and 1988 U.S. Olympic teams.
Tickets are available through Ticketron outlets or at the Loyola ticket office. Seats are $10, $7 and $5 each night.
