Prep Roundup : Record in Discus Helps Esperanza

Chuck Underwood set a school record in the discus to lead Esperanza to a 69-66 Empire League track and field victory over Loara Wednesday at Loara.
Underwood threw the discus 164 feet 6 inches, breaking the nine-year-old school record of 160-0 set by Steve Williams, who currently helps coach the Esperanza throwers. Underwood also won the shotput at 51-8 3/4 for Esperanza (4-0-1).
In Empire League girls’ track and field:
Esperanza 69, Loara 53--Esperanza’s Jennifer Harney set a school record in the discus with a toss of 115-4 1/2--breaking Stacy Neumeyer’s record of 110-0 set last year. Loara’s Leila Campbell tied a school record in the 100-yard dash with an 11.4 victory, and Kelly Grayton won the 110-yard low hurdles in 15.0.
In Century League boys’ track and field:
El Modena 78, Villa Park 58--Sophomore Mike Terry won the 880 (2:01), the 440 (51.8), the 220 (22.7) and anchored the mile relay (3:33.5) to lead host El Modena.
Ray Vansluis won the pole vault (12-0), the 100-yard dash (10.4) and long jump (21-1) for El Modena, which is 5-0 in league meets.
In Century League girls’ track and field:
El Modena 87, Villa Park 40--Jenny Moore won the 330 hurdles in 48.6 and the 110 hurdles (17.7) to lead El Modena (2-3) at home.
Canyon 85, Santa Ana 42--Allison Franke won the triple jump (37-2 1/2), the 110-yard low hurdles (15.9) and the discus (148-6 1/2) to lead Canyon at Santa Ana.
In South Coast League boys’ track and field:
Capistrano Valley 87, San Clemente 49--Tim Martin ran a hand-timed 10.6 to win the 100 meters, and a 21.9 to win the 200 for San Clemente.
In South Coast League girls’ track and field:
Capistrano Valley 65, San Clemente 62--Laurinda Mulhaupt won the 400 (61.0) and the 800 (2:23.1) to lead Capistrano Valley. Sophomore Terry Smythers won the 1,600 (5:27.7) and the 3,200 (11:47) for San Clemente.
In Sea View League softball:
Saddleback 13, Corona del Mar 0 (5 innings, mercy rule)--Freshman Desi Abrego (15-2) pitched a no-hitter, her fourth this season, for visiting Saddleback (20-2, 10-0). Abrego had six strikeouts and no walks but Saddleback made an error to allow a runner to reach base in the first inning. Nikkanni Andrews had a three-run home run, her fourth in her past four games.
University 3, Tustin 2--Liz Whitely scored the winning run for host University (11-7, 6-4) when Nicole Shammas’ single deflected off the pitcher’s glove.
In South Coast League softball:
El Toro 3, Mission Viejo 2 (8 innings)--Jaime Smith singled in the winning run in the eighth for host El Toro (15-9, 3-2). Paige Lauby (10-6) pitched a three-hitter with nine strikeouts for the victory.
Irvine 4, San Clemente 0--Jennifer Brundage (12-6) pitched a three-hitter and struck out eight for the victory at San Clemente. Irvine (13-6, 4-1) is in sole possession of first place in the league.
Dana Hills 5, Capistrano Valley 3--Jennifer Koenig and Amy Hellewell had RBI singles for Dana Hills (5-9, 2-3).
In Century League girls’ swimming:
Villa Park 98, El Modena 57--Shauna Scollick won the 100 butterfly (1:09.2) and the 100 backstroke (1:07.05) for the Spartans at El Modena.
In Pacific Coast League boys’ swimming:
Laguna Hills 101, Orange 55--The Hawks’ 200-yard medley team of sophomore J.J. Carvin, freshman Shuichi Matsumoto, sophomore Bryan Stoeckel and freshman Chad Carvin combined for a 1:47.64 to qualify for the Southern Section championships May 12 at Belmont Shores.
