A West German whom U.S. authorities call “the world’s top techno-bandit” was sentenced to 30 additional months in federal prison and a $40,100 fine in a daring, ill-fated helicopter escape attempt from a federal prison in Tallahassee, Fla. Werner Bruchhausen, 49, was given 30-month concurrent sentences on both of two counts of conspiracy to escape, in addition to the 15-year term imposed on Bruchhausen for sales of classified technology to Soviet Bloc countries. Authorities foiled Bruchhausen’s escape by setting up a U.S. Customs helicopter as the escape aircraft.
