Daniele Mitterrand, the wife of French President Francois Mitterrand, flew to Turkey to visit thousands of Kurdish refugees who fled an Iraqi army offensive last summer. A Turkish government official in Ankara said Mitterrand is visiting “on her own initiative.” She is scheduled to tour several refugee camps in Turkish Kurdistan during her four-day stay. Kurdish officials in Western Europe said they hope the first visit to any part of Kurdistan by such a prominent foreigner will focus attention on the plight of Iraqi Kurds both in Turkey and Iraq.
