Young’s Status Remains Uncertain

Steve Young received three shots to block the pain from his bruised ribs and got in only a limited practice Wednesday.

It might be the only work he gets before the 49ers play at Green Bay in Saturday’s divisional playoff game.

As he has all week, backup Elvis Grbac took the bulk of the practice snaps and Young trotted into the locker room three times to receive the pain-killing shots from team physician Bob Millard.

Young, officially listed as questionable, took a handful of snaps and threw a little on the side as the 49ers completed their last full practice before Saturday’s game.

“He wasn’t throwing 100%, that’s for sure,” Coach George Seifert said. “He threw some good balls. I don’t know that he got as much work as I thought he would, but it wasn’t dramatically less and our feeling is he’ll still be the starting quarterback on game day.”

Meanwhile, tight end Brent Jones was carted off the practice field after twisting his knee during drills.

Seifert said he didn’t think the injury would keep Jones out of the game.

“He twisted or sprained his knee, from what I’m told not significantly,” Seifert said. “They expect he might be able to practice [today], and he’s still expected to play in the game.”

Adrian Cooper is the only other tight end available to play. Ted Popson has been declared out with broken ribs and Sean Manuel is on injured reserve after suffering a shoulder separation.
