What if He Got You a Fruitcake?

Now that the Christmas presents are open, here’s what Ikea’s gift guru has to say about the hidden meanings behind some holiday gifts.
That polished business card holder from a business associate means that the giver views you as a valued friend, but not as a potential date. But the co-worker who gave you lingerie or bed linens has business of another kind on his or her mind.
Family members who hand out gift certificates are simply going through the motions; they’re merely fulfilling an obligation but really don’t want to get you a gift. As for the family photo you gave to the in-laws? That’s perfectly appropriate.
Finally, Ikea offers a solution for any inappropriate gifts that ended up under your tree: Simply return them--no questions asked.
