Holiday Arrests for Drunk Driving Drop

A shorter holiday helped reduce the total number of drunk driving arrests by the California Highway Patrol in Ventura County over the New Year’s holiday maximum enforcement period when compared to last year, officials said Thursday.
There were 15 arrests for drunk driving over a 30-hour period between 6 p.m. Tuesday and midnight Wednesday, said Officer Dave Cockrill of the CHP’s Ventura office.
There were 27 arrests last year during the New Year’s holiday, but because New Year’s Eve was on a weekend, the enforcement period extended over a 78-hour period, Cockrill said.
“Actually if you compare them it looks like the rate of arrest was up this year,” he said.
There were seven traffic accidents over this year’s 30-hour period, with four injuries and no deaths.
“That’s obviously good news,” Cockrill said.
