FULLERTON — A 48-year-old man suspected of drunk driving caused a five-car pileup Thursday as he was trying to flee the scene of an accident, police said.
Police arrested Frank Nehez of Fullerton on suspicion of drunk driving and misdemeanor hit-and-run, authorities said.
Nehez was driving east on Orangethorpe Avenue when his car rear-ended a white sedan at South Highland Avenue, Police Lt. Tony Hernandez said. As he sped up in an attempt to flee, his car pushed the sedan into a van in a left-turn lane, Hernandez said.
“He puts it in reverse and began backing out, spinning his tire. There was so much smoke that they couldn’t see him or his car and thought that he had gotten away,” Hernandez said. “But he was still there. . . . He then collided into a third vehicle, and that vehicle hit another parked car.”
One person complained of pain, but was not hospitalized, Hernandez said. Police said Nehez does not have a prior record of drunk driving.
