Cause of Schizophrenia

Contrary to the subheadline in your story on Peter Green, schizophrenia is not caused by drug use (“Back From Brink, Peter Green Plays On,” Calendar, Dec. 27). Current research suggests that this biologically based disorder may be caused by a genetic predisposition that is triggered by a viral infection in utero. Because schizophrenia manifests itself during teen years, many individuals, like the Fleetwood Mac guitarist, mistakenly attribute it to illicit substance abuse.
