Public Has a Chance to Air Ballclub Views

Saddleback Community College District trustees will meet in closed session Monday to vote on a temporary ball field that would be home for the Long Beach Riptide minor league baseball team this summer.

Trustees, who will hear public comments before going behind closed doors, will look at a one-year lease with Mission Viejo that calls for the city to spend $800,000 to renovate the existing campus ball field and erect temporary bleachers.

The contract also would require the city to finance an environmental impact report on a proposed $6-million ballpark for the Riptide.

Though the college would still have the option of turning down the stadium proposal pending the outcome of the environmental study, Riptide officials say they will commit to moving if the one-year lease is approved by trustees.

The 4 p.m. meeting will be at the library building, Room 321-B, at Saddleback College.
