Commission Will Hear Gas Station’s Proposal

A proposal to add a self-service car wash and food market to a Shell gas station will be heard by the Planning Commission on Monday.
The station is at La Paz Road and Marguerite Parkway, one of the busiest intersections in the city. Plans call for razing a kiosk and adding new buildings to the rear of the property.
The food mart would be about 770 square feet and would be open 24 hours, though it would not sell alcoholic beverages. Operators of the gas station intend to keep the car wash open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
City staff is recommending approval of the renovation project.
“We had experience with these kinds of proposals at two Texaco stations,” said city planner Chuck Wilson. “We don’t feel these plans intensify the use of the site very much.”
A similar proposal at a Unocal gas station on Crown Valley Parkway and Puerto Real was turned down in August by the commissioners, who believed that the extra services would attract too much traffic to the corner lot.
However, Unocal appealed to the City Council, which disagreed with the commission and approved the renovations in October.
