Jewell May Sue CNN, His Lawyer Says

Times Wire Services

Former Olympic bomb suspect Richard Jewell is considering whether to sue Cable News Network over its coverage of the investigation into last summer’s attack at the Atlanta Games, an attorney said Friday.

Lin Wood, one of two attorneys retained by Jewell to handle libel suits against the news media, said he has met with CNN executives to discuss coverage of the security guard’s role in the case.

A spokesman for CNN declined to comment.

Jewell, 34, found the knapsack that contained the pipe bomb just before the July 27 blast. He was the only named suspect before he was cleared by the government in October.

The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that Jewell’s attorneys had spoken to CNN about a possible out-of-court settlement. The talks followed a deal with NBC valued at more than $500,000, according to the newspaper.

In New York, NBC declined to comment on the reported settlement figure. “We’re not confirming that number,” NBC spokeswoman Beth Comstock said.
