Conservationists Urge Clinton to Ax Projects

Reuters

Conservation groups are urging President Clinton to cut the fiscal 1998 budget by rejecting a number of new water and flood control projects.

American Rivers and nearly 100 local and regional conservation groups sent a letter Thursday to the White House Office of Management and Budget targeting 30 projects they said should be rejected to save money and protect wildlife habitat.

The projects include flood control along the Los Angeles River, the Yazoo and Big Sunflower Rivers in Mississippi, the Red River in Oklahoma and the lower Mississippi River.

The groups urged Clinton to use his new line-item veto authority on these projects and others, which would be done by the Army Corps of Engineers.
