Political Funds

I wish someone would explain to me why I should fret or fuss about illegal contributions lavished upon President Clinton or Sen. Bob Dole or other politicians when so-called legal contributions provide governmental access and clout for large donors that is denied us common people.
For many years I have contributed $10 and $20 donations to political candidates of my party but regrettably when, on two separate occasions, I appealed to my representatives for assistance in fighting governmental actions of deep concern to me and many others, we were given only token assistance. I wonder if my appeals would have been more effective if I had given, legally, $10,000 or $20,000 donations such as you recount in your report on the death of Leonard Firestone, “confidant of several U.S. presidents” (Dec. 25).
Rather than searching for rule violations, let’s change the rules of a game that force even the most virtuous candidates into temptation.
