Stanton’s Services to County, City Are Honored

The City Council honored former Orange County Supervisor Roger R. Stanton on Tuesday for his 16 years on the board and for his help in securing county money for various city projects during his tenure.

“Roger has always been there with money when we seem to need it,” said Councilwoman Laurann Cook. “When you look at the word friend, Roger Stanton has always been a friend to Fountain Valley.”

Stanton opted not to seek a fifth supervisorial term in November after his political career was muddied by the county bankruptcy. Before becoming a supervisor, he served on the Fountain Valley City Council from 1974 to 1978.

Most recently, Stanton helped secure funding to complete the city’s Boys and Girls Club, which should open this year at Mile Square Regional Park. An entryway to the club from Brookhurst Street will be named Stanton Way.

“As part of my professional life, I have tried to make sure when resources are available that they don’t go into wasteful things,” Stanton told the council. “They go into positive things, boys and girls clubs, senior centers.”

In other action, the council voted 4 to 0 to spend $294,853 on a new phone system for City Hall, police headquarters, two fire stations and other public buildings. The current 12-year-old system is described as obsolete by the city staff.
