‘95 Bumper Crop Still Flourishing

* Jim Ange, Sr., DL, Thousand Oaks: A two-way starter for the Lancers, Ange started at tight end for Moorpark College and, with another strong season, should gain a Division I scholarship.
* Steve Aylsworth, Sr., DB, Westlake: Aylsworth attends Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa., where he earned a starting position at wide receiver at midseason and also is a reserve guard on the basketball team.
* Sam Benner, Sr., OL, St. Bonaventure: Early in the season, Benner, a scholarship player at Stanford, played for a short time on the offensive line, but eventually was a redshirt.
* Charles Bungert, Sr., OL, Camarillo: Bungert attended Utah and will receive a scholarship next season. After adding 20 pounds, he is being counted upon to start.
* Chris Czernek, Jr., QB, Newbury Park (Player of Year): A year after setting Southern Section records for passing yardage and touchdowns, Czernek proved it was no fluke by passing for 4,000 yards again, the nation’s first quarterback to do so.
* Brant Diediker, Sr., OL, Newbury Park (Lineman of Year): Diediker, a two-way player who led the Panthers in tackles, was a redshirt at Brigham Young and was forced to drop out of school temporarily because of an illness.
* Brock Diediker, Sr., LB, Newbury Park: Attending BYU with his brother Brant, Brock also was a redshirt. A running back and linebacker for Newbury Park, Brock moved to tight end and has gained 20 pounds.
* Greg Gallup, Sr., LB, Thousand Oaks: Gallup played outside linebacker at the United States Military Academy Prep School in Ft. Monmouth, N.J., and next year will be a plebe at West Point, where he will play for Army.
* Robert Gerner, Sr., OL, Buena: Gerner, who had a 4.0 grade-point average at Buena, is studying business administration at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, but did not play football.
* Jamal Harris, Sr., RB, Westlake: Harris rejected a scholarship to Oregon State, went to Moorpark College and earned second-team all-conference honors as a safety.
* DaJuan Hawkins, Sr., WR, Newbury Park: The receiver who led the Panthers in touchdown catches received a scholarship from Washington during the summer and was a redshirt.
* Brandon Jackson, Sr., RB, Thousand Oaks: The burly Jackson, who rushed for more than 1,000 yards despite nagging injuries, took a year off from football and worked a construction job.
* Ronney Jenkins, Sr., RB, Hueneme, (Back of Year): Jenkins overcame initial homesickness and helped give Brigham Young its best running attack in many years by rushing for 740 yards and scoring 14 touchdowns.
* Chris Melzer, Sr., DB, Thousand Oaks: Melzer, a big-play defensive back, walked on at Brigham Young, making the practice squad but not playing in any games.
* Ryan Nielsen, Jr., DL, Royal: Nielsen added 10 pounds and became the county’s most dominant defensive player, making 129 tackles, 19 sacks, and causing seven fumbles. He will attend USC.
* Eddie Patterson, Sr., DB, Newbury Park: Patterson walked on at Stanford and, after using a redshirt season, might gain a scholarship because he impressed coaches with his scout-team play.
* Bryan Paul, Sr., DB, Moorpark: Paul was backup quarterback at Valley College behind David Lins, completing 15 of 26 passes for 203 yards and one touchdown.
* Patrick Reddick, Jr., DB, Newbury Park: Reddick had his third outstanding season in a row and finished sixth on the all-time Southern Section receiving list with 168 catches and 2,943 yards.
* Blane Saipaia, Sr., DL, Channel Islands: Saipaia broke into the starting lineup early in the season at Colorado State and played offensive tackle and tight end.
* Bruce Samuel, Sr., LB, Rio Mesa: Samuel’s lack of size prevented him from playing college football, but his grades enabled him to attend Cal Poly San Luis Obispo as an engineering major.
* R.J. Starr, Sr., OL, Thousand Oaks: He overcame his disappointment of not being offered a Division I scholarship and was a starting tackle at Division II UC Davis.
* Jason Victor, Sr., WR, Westlake: Unable to accept a Division I scholarship because of his grades, Victor played at Sacramento City College, catching 18 passes for 297 yards and three touchdowns.
* Justin Vint, Sr., K, Newbury Park: A two-way starter at wide receiver and defensive back who also punted and returned kicks, Vint did not play this season.
