British Are Coming for Lawn Bowling

The Newport Harbor Lawn Bowling Club will host a social competition Tuesday among nine couples from various lawn bowling clubs in England.
The English visitors are part of an international friendship group whose members travel to English-speaking countries.
The competition, to begin at 1 p.m., is free to spectators. The Newport Harbor club is at 1550 Crown Drive North, Corona del Mar. For more information, call Tag Taggart at (714) 546-0784.

Donna Waller, 32, a top American hurdler and triple jumper, has been hired as an assistant track and field coach at Long Beach State, Coach Andy Sythe said.
Waller, who took part in the U.S. Olympic trials 1988, 1992 and 1996, was an assistant coach at San Diego State the last five years.

April Harriman, a middle blocker from Brethren Christian High, has orally committed to play volleyball this fall at Memphis, her mother, Leana Marshall, said.
Harriman was a two-time All-Olympic League selection.

Kelby Rumph, an outside hitter for Woodbridge High, orally committed to play volleyball at Jacksonville (Ala.) State in the fall.
Rumph was a second-team All-Sea View League selection this season for the Warriors, who finished 11-9 and advanced to the Southern Section Division II-AA semifinals.

The date of the Marina-San Clemente girls’ basketball game, originally scheduled for Saturday, has been changed. The game, between the No. 4 and 8 teams in the county, will be Jan. 25.
