Chapman Women Rally to Fifth Victory in Row

The Chapman women’s basketball team won its fifth consecutive game, rallying to beat Azusa Pacific, 64-61, Saturday in a nonconference game at Azusa.

The Panthers (8-3) trailed by as many as nine points in the first half and six in the second. Flo Luppani made two free throws with 2 minutes 15 seconds left to play for a 62-61 lead and Lyndsay Brown scored with 1:44 remaining for the final margin.

Brown, Chapman’s leading scorer, was held out the first 12 minutes for violating a team rule this week, but scored a career-high 28 points. She averaged 24.3 points in three games this week.

Melissa Lopez had 10 points and Luppani (eight assists) and Stef McNamara (10 rebounds) each had six points for the Panthers.

Azusa Pacific (7-8) lost its fourth in a row.

In nonconference men’s basketball:

Southern California College 80, Pacific Christian 59--Southern California College (12-4) jumped to a 46-24 halftime lead. Justin McIntee came off the bench to score 20 points in 19 minutes for the Vanguards. Also in reserve, Jeff Rose scored 16 points for Southern California. Charles Henderson had 22 points and 11 rebounds for Pacific Christian (2-18).

In nonconference women’s swimming:

Earley sweeps--Arika Earley won both diving events in a tri-meet between UC Irvine, Illinois and Fresno State. Earley had 267.40 points in the one-meter event and 272.50 in the three-meter event.

Illinois, which finished first in nine of 11 events, defeated Irvine, 154-121, and Fresno State, 180-118. Fresno State got the victory over the Anteaters, 192-94.

In the Paul Mitchell men’s volleyball tournament:

Long Beach State 3, Pepperdine 2--After losing the first two games 15-7, 15-5, Long Beach (2-0) battled back to win the last three games, 15-8, 15-12 and 15-10. Geoffrey Cryst had 22 kills for the 49ers. George Roumain had 24 kills and Kevin Barnett 23 for Pepperdine (1-1).
