Esperanza Girls Upset No. 1 Santa Margarita in Soccer

Stacy Jarne scored the game-winning goal in the second half to lead fifth-ranked Esperanza to a 2-1 upset over top-ranked Santa Margarita (7-1-1) in nonleague girls’ soccer at Esperanza High.
Esperanza (11-4-1) took a 1-0 lead in the first half with a goal from Heather Mears. Pa’tra Glavin scored for the Eagles.
In nonleague girls’ basketball:
Brea Olinda 75, El Dorado 36--Brea Olinda (11-1) limited El Dorado (7-7) to only nine baskets from the field. Stephanie Wettlin scored 20 points and grabbed 16 rebounds for the top-ranked Wildcats. Jennifer Saari also scored 17 points and had seven assists for Brea. Nicole DeBruijn scored 12 points for El Dorado.
Corona del Mar 55, Laguna Beach 50--After falling behind, 28-17, in the first half, Corona del Mar outscored Laguna Beach, 38-22, in the second half.
Lindsay Warmington scored 24 of her game-high 29 points in the second half, including 18 in the fourth quarter. April Chambers scored 19 points for Laguna Beach.
Huntington Beach 53, Dana Hills 37--Huntington Beach (11-4) outscored Dana Hills, 18-3, in the fourth quarter, after leading by only one point at the end of three quarters. Megan Masuda and Christine Kimoto each made four three-pointers and scored 15 points for Huntington Beach. Kelly Medlen added 14 points for the Oilers. Jami Bari scored 15 points for Dana Hills.
Laguna Hills 54, Century 44--Laguna Hills (12-3) used a 14-2 run in the second quarter to get past Century (12-3). Tayyiba Haneef had 20 points and 10 rebounds for second-ranked Laguna Hills. Tamara Inoue added 16 points for the Hawks. Aprile Powell scored a game-high 28 points for Century.
In the Canyon wrestling invitational:
Anaheim wins--Anaheim finished first with 189 points. The Colonists had three wrestlers win their weight classes and six others place in the top five. Mike Nowell (152) of Esperanza was named outstanding upper-weight wrestler after pinning Jim Gominsky in 3 minutes 34 seconds to win his weight class.
In the North Torrance wrestling tournament:
Brethren Christian finishes fourth--The Warriors outscored three Southern Section Division I teams ranked in the top 10. Brethren Christian posted decision wins by Michael Delaney (112) and Patrick Cadwallader (140). Michael Davidson placed second (135) for the Warriors. Brethren Christian freshmen Michael Simpson (103) and Stephen Garcia (119) placed sixth.
