Oldest Governor Was Once Youngest

Cecil Underwood was inaugurated West Virginia’s oldest governor, 40 years after he took the oath as the state’s youngest chief executive. Underwood’s first term stressed finding jobs for coal miners displaced by machines. This time, the 74-year-old Republican wants to create jobs by attracting high-technology companies. “When I complete this term in 2001, our lives will be dramatically different as the industrial age gives way to the information age,” he said at an afternoon inauguration.
