STANTON — A Garden Grove police officer shot and killed a man who had broken into a retired couple’s mobile home in an attempt to evade authorities Tuesday night after a high-speed chase, investigators said.
Garden Grove police had spotted a stolen car about 7:50 p.m. and tried to pull over the driver, who then led them on a chase to Stanton, said Lt. Richard Paddock of the Sheriff’s Department, which is investigating the shooting.
At the corner of Western and Katella avenues, the driver crashed into a light pole and emerged from the mangled car apparently with only minor injuries, investigators said. The man then ran to the nearby La Lampara mobile home park in the 7200 block of Katella Avenue and forced his way into one of the mobile homes, Paddock said.
Police entered the home moments later and opened fire, Paddock said. The man was taken to Los Alamitos Medical Center, where he died. His name was not released pending family notification.
“Circumstances of the shooting are under investigation,” Paddock said.
Authorities would not say whether the suspect was armed.
