King Day: Slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. would have turned 68 today. . . . Although the official holiday marking the event is not until Monday, libraries in Glendale and Burbank will honor him today with children’s programs featuring stories, a slide show and a friendship bracelet workshop. . . .
Hatter Honored: . . . At Los Angeles County’s 15th annual Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration today, U.S. District Judge Terry Hatter will be honored for his “courage in sentencing.” . . . Hatter battled unsuccessfully to shorten a nine-year prison term imposed on Pacoima drug dealer-turned-activist Bobbie Marshall.
Highs and Lows: CSUN basketball Coach Bobby Braswell’s first season has been an emotional roller coaster. On the court, it’s been great; his Matadors have already won six games--only one fewer than all of last season. . . . But off the court, Braswell, above, has had to cope with the recent deaths of his father and brother (C1).
Disaster Decree: The city of San Fernando has been declared a county disaster area in the wake of last week’s fierce winds. . . . At the prompting of Valley representative Mike Antonovich, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors will lobby for state and federal disaster status for the rest of the county, which would make residents eligible for disaster aid money for cleanup and repairs.
