Baby Whale’s Condition Improves

SAN DIEGO — The baby California gray whale that beached itself along Venice Beach on Saturday continues to get stronger at Sea World and is now considered in stable condition, officials said Tuesday.
Jim Antrim, the park’s general curator, said the whale’s heart and respiratory system are functioning well and the animal continues being fed every three to four hours and monitored around the clock. “Everybody is pleased with the calf,” Antrim said.
In response to numerous calls from the public asking about the whale, Sea World is providing daily updates on its hotline, 1-800-23-SHAMU, which operates from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. seven days a week.
When the whale arrived at Sea World, it was dehydrated, underweight and severely malnourished. Caretakers administered antibiotics, glucose and artificial milk.
