Mater Dei’s Castleton Commits to Brigham Young

David Castleton, a two-sport standout at Mater Dei High, has orally committed to Brigham Young, where he will play football and basketball, boys’ Athletic Director Gary McKnight said Tuesday.

Castleton (6 feet 1, 190 pounds) was a four-year starter at wide receiver and defensive back in football, playing on two national championship teams. He was a second-team Times all-county selection last season.

Castleton, who lives in Irvine, is a starting guard on Mater Dei’s basketball team, which is ranked No. 1 in the Southern Section Division I-A poll and Orange County. He helped the Monarchs win a state championship in 1995.

Jared Flint, a first-team All-Sea View League quarterback at Irvine High, has orally committed to attend Indiana, the school announced.

Flint passed for more than 3,800 yards in his two-year varsity career and led the Vaqueros to the playoffs both seasons.

Kim Buccola, a senior midfielder at Mater Dei, has orally committed to attend Loyola Marymount in the fall, Monarch Coach Austin Sharp said.

Buccola was a first-team All-South Coast League selection last season and scored the winning goal in the championship game of the Ocean View tournament this season.

Brian Singleton, a running back at Saddleback College, has signed with Colorado State, he said. Singleton (5-11, 205) carried the ball 44 times for 211 yards and two touchdowns. He had six receptions for 59 yards and averaged 23.4 yards on eight kickoff returns.

Dave Irby resigned as men’s soccer coach at Concordia, the school announced.

Irby recently signed a contract to coach the Salem (Ore.) Cascade Surge of the United Systems Independent Soccer League, beginning Feb. 1.

Irby was 19-70-5 in five years as Concordia coach, including a 3-14-2 record last season.

John Nicoletti, director of sales and guest services at the Pond, is leaving his position Friday to start his own company.

Nicoletti facilitated the ground breaking for the Pond when he was a public information specialist for the city of Anaheim. He has worked for Ogden Entertainment, which runs marketing and operations at the Pond, the past 5 1/2 years.

No replacement has been named.

Eight teams of high school and community college baseball players ages 18 and younger will compete in a double-elimination tournament Friday through Sunday at Tustin and Foothill highs.

The games, sponsored by the Tustin Cubs and O’Keiki Baseball Club, will be played at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. each day and are free to the public.
