Fenwick Lands First Recruit for Matadors

Defensive back Angelo Garza of Laney College in Oakland has committed to Cal State Northridge, according to Laney Coach Stan Peters, making him the first recruit under new Matador Coach Jim Fenwick.

Garza, who is 6 feet, 195 pounds, was an All-Northern California Football Conference selection in 1995, but did not play last season to work on his academics, Peters said.

“He’s a helluva hitter,” Peters said. “He’s tremendously outstanding on special teams, too. He just likes to hit people, which is nice. He’s an outstanding young man.”

Garza will be at Northridge next semester, in time for spring football.

College bound: Derrell Daniels of Sylmar High, an All-City 4-A Division linebacker, made a commitment to play football for Washington.

Daniels, 6-2, 215 pounds, also took recruiting trips to California, Arizona and Oregon State, but liked what he saw most last weekend at Washington.

“The football program is the best in the Pac-10,” Daniels said.

Washington coaches told Daniels he could play as a freshman.

Daniels, who transferred to Sylmar from San Fernando in the fall, was the leading tackler on one of the area’s best City defenses.
