Teemu Selanne will wear No. 17 in a tribute to teammate Jari Kurri at the NHL All-Star game, but it wasn’t his first choice or even his second.

“Every other number that was left, I don’t like. I can’t believe I can’t take No. 8,” Selanne said. His difficulty claiming a number created a stir among some of the Ducks, who object to the policy that starting status, not seniority, determines priority in selecting numbers.

“What if one year somebody had 99?” said starting winger Paul Kariya, who thinks seniority should be the determining factor even though he would have lost his No. 9 to Dallas’ Mike Modano if that were the policy and Modano wasn’t injured.
