Assembly Fellowships Open to Graduates

In announcing that college graduates may now apply for the 1997-98 Assembly Fellowship Program, Assemblyman Bob Hertzberg (D-Sherman Oaks) has more than applicants’ interests in mind, his chief of staff, Miriam Jaffe, conceded.

The 18 people chosen as fellows, Jaffe explained, interview Assembly members and decide in whose office they want to work. That means the 80 Assembly members are essentially competing for fellows’ services.

“It’s sort of a role reversal,” Jaffe said.

The 11-month program pays fellows $1,638 a month plus benefits to serve in a Sacramento Assembly office. They also participate in a weekly academic seminar with legislative members, senior staff, journalists, lobbyists and state government officials, earning 12 graduate credits from Cal State Sacramento in the process.

Selection of the 18 Assembly fellows will be completed in mid-May. The application deadline is Feb. 19. Application materials and information are available in Hertzberg’s Van Nuys office at 6150 Van Nuys Blvd. or by calling (818) 376-4040.
