Seeking Break, Haar Resigns as Lancer Girls’ Volleyball Coach

Thousand Oaks High girls’ volleyball Coach Robert Haar, who guided the Lancers to playoff appearances in each of his three seasons, has resigned, saying the coaching workload was too much.
“The past two months I’ve looked at the whole picture and realized I need more time,” said Haar, who informed players of his decision Friday.
With the help of Stanford-bound middle blocker Jenn Detmer, the Lancers advanced to the Southern Section Division I-A semifinals in November before losing to Capistrano Valley.
Haar will retain his position as English teacher and yearbook advisor at Thousand Oaks. He will also coach the boys’ junior varsity volleyball team.
In another Marmonte League coaching change, Kevin Judd resigned as the Newbury Park boys’ and girls’ volleyball coach.
Judd said he wanted to concentrate on earning his degree from Cal State Northridge.
Junior varsity Coach Craig Witmer is Judd’s likely replacement.
Appeal denied: Cal State Northridge has lost an appeal made on behalf of academically ineligible basketball player Jeff Parris, meaning the freshman forward will have only three seasons to play for the Matadors.
Parris was ruled ineligible last month by the NCAA clearing house, which ruled that one of his classes at Long Beach Jordan High did not meet the standards for a core course.
“We’re, of course, disappointed and we think the wrong decision was made,” said Northridge Coach Bobby Braswell. “We feel for the kid, but we were prepared.”
Parris, the first player signed by Braswell after he was hired in May, would have played a significant number of minutes and may have started for the Matadors this season.
Swimmer transfers: Keri Quance, the younger sister of Olympic swimmer Kristine Quance, has transferred to Northridge and will swim for the Matadors this month, Coach Barry Schreifels said.
The younger Quance spent a year and a half at Brigham Young, but she did not swim for the Cougars, Schreifels said.
