Boys’ Soccer Game Postponed Because of Soggy Field Conditions

SAN CLEMENTE — Rains hadn’t fallen on the San Clemente High field in two days, but officials said Friday afternoon it was unplayable and postponed the boys’ soccer game between the fifth-ranked Tritons and seventh-ranked Capistrano Valley.
“The field was terrible,” referee Pedro Banuelos said.
Referee Gary Castro agreed.
“It comes down to the referee’s decision,” Castro said. “The field is unacceptable. I don’t want to see anybody get hurt. That’s the worst I’ve ever seen it.”
San Clemente’s field, known for its drainage problems, still had standing water on it in places. San Clemente coaches and players wanted to play, but Capistrano Valley Coach Ron Willms wasn’t nearly as excited.
“Eighty percent of the time, it’s better than this,” said Willms, who used to coach at San Clemente.
The teams have not agreed on a date when the game will be rescheduled.
