Canyon Holds On to Upset Fourth-Ranked Orange in Soccer

Canyon used two second-half goals and strong defense to defeat Orange, ranked fourth in Orange County, 3-2, in a Century League boys’ soccer game Friday at Canyon High.
Canyon goalkeeper Brandon Avery, who had 10 saves, made key stops in the last 20 minutes to help the Comanches (11-3-2, 2-0 in league) hold off the Panthers.
Although Brandon Coleman, Carlos Cortez and Cesar Corona scored goals to give Canyon a 3-1 lead, Orange (12-3-2, 1-2) had some good scoring opportunities in the closing minutes. Avery made big saves on shots by Jose Lopez, Daniel Califf and Stephen Gonzalez.
Califf scored with three minutes left to make it, 3-2.
In other Century League games:
Foothill 1, El Modena 0--Juan Candela scored in the 70th minute to help Foothill (4-5-1, 2-1) upset 10th-ranked El Modena (8-2-2, 1-1).
Santa Ana Valley 5, Villa Park 2--Obed Gaona, making his first varsity start, had 12 saves for Santa Ana Valley (8-2-2, 1-1).
In the Empire League:
El Dorado 5, Century 1--Ignacio Cid and Eric Lyons each scored two goals for visiting El Dorado (14-3-3, 2-0).
Katella 1, Loara 0--Jorge Lucero scored off an assist by Jacob Irvine in the first half for Katella (5-6-2, 1-1).
Cypress 2, Kennedy 0--Steve Ponce and Mike Meza each scored and Matt Reson recorded his ninth shutout for Cypress (13-2-1, 2-0).
In the Freeway League:
Fullerton 2, Buena Park 0--James Oakden scored two goals for Fullerton (5-7-2, 1-1-1), giving him four this week.
Sunny Hills 1, Troy 1--Andy Hirsch scored the tying goal with five minutes remaining for Troy (2-0-1 in league). Nick Albert scored in the first half for Sunny Hills (5-8-3, 1-0-1).
In the Garden Grove League:
La Quinta 3, Garden Grove 1--Daniel Almazon scored two goals to lead La Quinta (3-4-2, 2-0-2).
Pacifica 1, Santiago 0--Nathan Kolano scored a first-half goal for Pacifica (6-4-1, 3-0-1).
In the Golden West League:
Santa Ana 4, Westminster 1--Mario Gonzalez scored two second-half goals for top-ranked Santa Ana (10-0-3, 1-0-1).
Ocean View 2, Tustin 0--Goalie Clay Monroe stopped a penalty kick for Ocean View (5-7-1, 1-1) in the shutout.
Servite 3, Saddleback 3 (OT)--Reed Mokler scored two second-half goals, including the tying goal with eight minutes remaining for visiting Servite, ranked second in Division III. Robbie Velton also had a second-half goal and Mark Kisting had two assists to help Servite (12-3-5) rally from a three-goal halftime deficit.
Saddleback is 6-2-5, 0-0-2.
In the Orange League:
Brea Olinda 3, Savanna 1--Shawn Tellez scored three goals, giving him 14, for Brea Olinda (8-1-3, 1-0), ranked fifth in Division III.
In the Sea View league:
Woodbridge 3, Irvine 0--Yigall Kersenbaum, Kevin Friedland and Jeff Jensen scored goals for host Woodbridge (11-2-2, 2-0), ranked sixth in the county.
In the South Coast League:
Dana Hills 3, Mission Viejo 2--Julio Peraza scored all three of his goals in the second half for Dana Hills (3-4, 1-0). Nick Gilliam and Hooman Karamian scored for Mission Viejo (5-4-3, 1-1-0).
In the Sunset League:
Esperanza 4, Huntington Beach 0--Josh Deits scored his 10th and 11th goals of the season for host Esperanza (17-1-1, 3-0), ranked third in the county.
Fountain Valley 2, Edison 0--Robbie Kaessner and Ryan Futagaki scored for visiting Fountain Valley (10-2-2, 2-0), ranked eighth in the county.
Marina 1, Los Alamitos 0--Joel Calcagno scored the winning goal in the 37th minute off an assist by Omar Guerrero for Marina (11-5-2, 1-1). Tony Medina had seven saves.
Los Alamitos is 9-7-1, 0-2.
In Garden Grove League girls’ soccer:
La Quinta 1, Garden Grove 1--Rhiannon Lee scored for Garden Grove (3-4-2, 1-0-1) and Sarah Skinner had the only goal for La Quinta (4-5-1, 0-1-1).
In the Sea View League:
Irvine 3, Woodbridge 1--Stephanie Baldwin scored two goals and Jennifer Coulter had three assists for Irvine (8-5-4, 1-0-2).
In nonleague girls’ water polo:
Newport Harbor 6, University 3--Alden Moore and Erin Murphy each scored two goals for Newport Harbor (9-4), ranked fifth in the county. Erin Hayes scored twice for University (6-2).
Rosary 9, Walnut 3--Kelly McNeley scored two of her three goals in the fourth quarter and goalie Britni DeGrazio had 16 saves in her first start of the year for sixth-ranked Rosary (10-2).
Santa Margarita 8, Capistrano Valley 3--Katie Ferguson scored three goals and Jennifer Reardon had two for Santa Margarita (9-4).
