Music Enlivens King Holiday at Harbor Village

Shoppers and those just enjoying Saturday’s balmy weather at the Ventura Harbor Village were treated to a reggae concert as part of a weekend concert series in celebration of Martin Luther King Day.
Throughout the afternoon, passersby stopped to listen to the soft Caribbean rhythms of Yahman while making their way to the stores.
While little mention was made of the King holiday or the civil rights leader’s legacy, those who stopped appeared to enjoy the musical treat.
“This is great,” said Dave Hollard of Ventura, who stopped to dance with his 14-month-old daughter, Ashley. “We just came here for lunch and a walk on the beach, so this is a nice bonus.”
The fourth annual concert series is sponsored by the Martin Luther King Jr. Committee of Ventura County Birthday Observance and will continue through Monday.
Today’s event will feature rhythm and blues and jazz and soul performances beginning at 12:30 p.m. Monday will feature both jazz and blues performances beginning at 12:30 p.m.
The concerts are held at the carousel stage and at the village fountain in the Ventura Harbor Village, 1559 Spinnaker Drive.
