Crack Epidemic

* Carole Johnson of West Hollywood (letter, Jan. 10) asked why the people in Rep. Maxine Waters’ (D-Los Angeles) district were so vulnerable to the use of cocaine. She also stated that CIA agents do not stand on street corners with guns held to people’s heads, forcing them to use this drug. I would like to respond for all the kids who became drug users.
Look in your own districts and tell us how many people are on so-called legal drugs and the more sophisticated illegal drugs. With crack cocaine you do not need to put a gun to someone’s head. With crack cocaine and its addictive power, just one use to a 10-year-old child will last for years.
There comes a time when brave people like Waters stand up for truth and justice instead of always asking, “Why couldn’t those people prevent their own situation?” I commend Waters for looking out for the underdog.
