Mudslide Destroys Washington House; 4 Die

BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, Wash. — A mudslide knocked a three-story house off its foundation and sent it sliding into Puget Sound on Sunday, killing two parents and their two preschoolers.
The swirling mud slammed into the back of the wood-frame house, sending the top floor on a 50-foot slide down into the water. Then the second floor collapsed onto the first floor, said Fire Chief Kirk Stickels.
Searchers, aided by dogs, cameras and sonar, found the bodies in the basement, said fire department spokesman Ken Guy.
The family had been remodeling the house and apparently had been sleeping in the basement, authorities said.
Three neighboring homes were evacuated.
