Bull Gets Red Flag as Carl’s Jr. Benches Its Pitchman Rodman

TIMES STAFF WRITER

Basketball forward Dennis Rodman was benched Monday by Carl’s Jr.

After being suspended last week by the NBA for at least 11 games and fined $25,000 for kicking a court-side photographer, the controversial Chicago Bull found himself suspended as a pitchman for the Anaheim-based burger chain.

“We decided, in light of what’s gone on, to pull his commercial from our campaign,” said CKE Restaurants spokeswoman Suzi Brown. “I’m not sure if it’s permanent or temporary, but we have pulled that commercial from our rotation.”

Rodman, who was ordered by the NBA to undergo counseling, has been pitching Carl’s Jr.’s menu since early in 1996, when he appeared in a commercial eating one of the chain’s messy, drippy burgers.

The decision to pull Rodman’s commercials won’t affect the chain’s overall advertising, Brown said.
