A 24-year-old Oxnard man shot over the weekend died of his wounds Monday morning at St. John’s Regional Medical Center, a coroner’s spokesman said.
Jose Basilan was shot in a confrontation early Sunday morning in front of John’s Rendezvous Restaurant, in the 3700 block of Saviers Road in Oxnard, authorities said. Police are still looking for the shooter, described as a Filipino man in his mid-20s.
Basilan’s mother, Teresita Hacuman, said her son was standing up to a man who was arguing with his friend.
“He was that way,” Hacuman said. “He would stand up for his friends.”
Hacuman said her son’s death was doubly hard to take because her young daughter died of leukemia just a year ago.
Friends who gathered at the family home in Oxnard remembered Basilan, a tile-layer, as an easygoing man who was always willing to joke around.
His mother said Basilan had plans to go to Santa Barbara City College to study physical therapy.
